- 1). Drain the gas can of any remaining fuel. Dispose of fuel responsibly (see Warnings). Open the gas can in a well-ventilated area and allow most of the vapor to escape.
- 2). Fill the gas can halfway with water and liquid detergent. Swirl the mixture around inside the can until all the sides have been cleaned. Add a few nuts and bolts to help scour the sides and bottom of the can. Rise out the can. Refill it when it's dry.
- 3). Dispose of soapy water responsibly. It contains traces of gas which may affect water ecosystems.
