- 1). Unplug the GE washer's power cord from the electric outlet. Remove any clothing that is still in the washer. Drain any water still in the washtub using a bowl and a bucket. Pull the washing machine away from the wall. Disconnect the water inlet hoses using a pair of channel-lock pliers to loosen the fittings. Clean up water spillage with rags. Move the washer farther from the wall if necessary to give you room to work behind it.
- 2). Remove the access cover from the back of the GE washing machine using a Phillips screwdriver. Set the cover aside out of the way. Loosen the hex screw on the pump coupler using a socket and ratchet. Separate the coupler from the water pump. Mark the proper location of each hose on the pump using a marker and masking tape.
- 3). Disconnect the hoses from the pump using channel-lock pliers to release the hose clamps. Clean up water spillage using rags. Remove the three hex screws securing the pump to the machine using a socket and ratchet. Remove the water pump from the machine and put the new one in place.
- 4). Install the pump retaining screws and tighten them with a socket and ratchet. Connect the hoses to the pump according to the markings. Move the hose clamps into place using a pair of channel-lock pliers to release the clamps. Install the coupler on the water pump and tighten the hex screw using a socket and ratchet.
- 5). Place the cover on the back of the washing machine and secure the retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Move the washer close enough to the wall so that you can connect the water supply hoses. Do not overtighten the hose fittings. Plug the power cord into the electric outlet. Push the machine against the wall.
