- 1). Shut off all power to the electrical circuits you will be working on at the main circuit breaker. Test any wires with a voltage tester, if needed, to ensure they are not live.
- 2). Measure the length from the bathroom fan to the switch. Allow for several spare feet during installation. Cut a length of 4 wire Romex cable to this length with a wire clippers.
- 3). Connect the ground wire from the bath fan to a metal ground in the ceiling with a screw using a screwdriver.
- 4). Connect one of the wires in the Romex cable to the black wire from the bath fan using twist-on connectors.
- 5). Connect one of the wires in the Romex cable to the white wire from the bath fan using twist-on connectors.
- 6). Connect one of the two remaining wires in the Romex cable to the black wire from the bath fan light using twist-on connectors.
- 7). Connect the final wire in the Romex cable to the white wire from the bath fan light using twist-on connectors.
- 8). Tape the other ends of the length of Romex cable together and attach them to the end of a wire runner with electrical tape.
- 9). Insert the Romex cable attached to the wire runner through the hole in the ceiling behind the fan. Running the wire from the fan to the switch is preferable because gravity aids in running the wires from high locations to lower locations.
- 10
Run the cable across the ceiling until you reach the top of the wall above the switch. In most bathrooms, the inside of the bathroom ceiling should be bare and unobstructed. When you reach the wall, the flexible end of the wire running kit will dangle down into the wall and guide the rest of the kit. Light switches, if installed to code, are always attached to wall studs, so as you push the wire down through the wall make sure it is on the same side of the wall stud as the switch. Continue to push the cable until you reach the location of the switch. - 11
Retrieve the cable and wire runner from the hole in the wall behind the switch. Remove the cable from the wire runner and tape it to the wall with masking tape so it will not fall back into the wall. - 12
Retract the wire runner back through the hole in the ceiling behind the fan. - 13
Connect the Romex wires attached to the black and white wires in the bath fan to the black and white wires of the fan switch using twist-on connectors. - 14
Connect the Romex wires attached to the black and white wires in the bath fan light to the black and white wires of the fan light switch using twist-on connectors. - 15
Restore power to the area you have been working in at the main circuit breaker and test both the fan light and fan switches.
