- 1). Turn off the gas to the water heater and close the water inlet valve completely.
- 2). Turn on a water faucet to "Hot" and allow it to drain. Screw a hose onto the drain valve on the Kenmore hot water heater and place the other end of the hose near a drain.
- 3). Open the water heater's drain valve and allow it to drain completely. Close the drain valve when it is finished draining the sediment. Turn off the faucet in your home as well.
- 4). Open the burner's access door and vacuum out any dust or debris on the burners. Close the access door and turn the Kenmore gas water heater back on.
- 5). Vacuum the water heater's base to remove lint, dirt and dust. Do this regularly as a matter of practice.
- 6). Open the water inlet valve to fill the tank and turn the heat to "Hot."
