Electric Fireplace Safety - How to Safely Operate a Electric Fireplace

An electric fireplace is the ultimate substitute for a traditional wood burning fireplace.
When we say substitute we mean it, because an electric fireplace doesn't produce any real flames.
In fact, this is why many homeowners overlook the safety requirements to operate this type of fireplace.
The main thing to remember is a fireplace that operates on electricity is going to need the same safety concern as a typical space heater.
This is because both a space heater and this type of fireplace use electricity to produce heat using the same type of methods.
This article will help educate the average homeowner on how to safety operate an electric ventless fireplace.
When looking at the safety requirements for this type of ventless fireplace you need to think outside the box.
Generally when you think of ventless fireplace safety or fireplace safety in general you're usually worried about failed gas lines or burning embers escaping the fire pit.
However, an electric fireplace produces no flames, in fact some models have such life like flames that it can fool someone who doesn't know it's a real fireplace.
The first thing you should do is read and follow the specifications and recommendations set forth by the manufacturer.
This may include what type of surface and or insulation is required around or under your model, and other things such as operational time limits and restrictions on extension cords.
You should always make sure there is no clutter or flammable material anywhere near or around your electric fireplace.
It's also smart to never let your electric based fireplace run when you aren't home; in fact you should allow an hour or two of cool downtime before you leave if you have large pets.
The reason is that let's say you have a large dog and you turn off your unit and leave, well five minutes latter your dog knocks it over onto the floor or on its end and since it's still severely hot it can start a fire.
Remember, any standard safety precautions you would follow with a space heater you'll want to follow with your fireplace.
If you're looking for the look and feel of a fireplace, but don't want the fire than the electric ventless fireplace might be right for you.
However, just like any type of heating unit you need to make sure you take into consideration certain safety producers and precautions.
By following the simple recommendations in this article you can safely operate an electric fireplace in your home.
