- 1). Place the new water heater in position. Place a level against side of water heater. Check the vertical alignment on the side and front of tank. The water heater should be level all the way around.
- 2). Locate and identify the cold water supply line and hot water feed line.
- 3). Install a gate valve on cold water supply line. This provides a local shut-off valve for the water heater for future service.
- 4). Locate and identify the cold-water inlet and hot-water discharge ports on heater. The cold-water inlet should have a plastic tube sitting on a lip underneath the threaded inlet. This is the dip tube. Leave it in place.
- 5). Apply two to three wraps of plumbing tape to both ends of each nipple. Tape should thoroughly cover threads.
- 6). Thread one nipple into each port and tighten with wrench. If you are plumbing with copper, be sure to sweat fittings onto pipe before attaching it to the heater.
- 7). Thread the bottom half of the union on top of each nipple and tighten with a wrench.
- 8). Plumb hot and cold water lines directly over the top of their respective ports on the water heater. Measure and cut drop pipes to allow enough room for union installation.
- 9). Connect the top half of both unions to pipes.
- 10
