- 1). Wash metallic, marble or cement sculptures with a degreasing soap, using steel wool. Gently wash plastic, clay and vinyl sculptures, using soft rags. Rinse each surface, using wet rags. Let the sculpture dry for two hours.
- 2). Abrade plastic, marble and vinyl sculptures to promote adhesion. Gently sand these sculptures until they feel rough.
- 3). Cover any parts of the sculpture you'd prefer unpainted, using either masking paper, painter's tape or both. Place a drop cloth beneath the sculpture.
- 4). Coat the sculpture with a primer based on the piece's composition. Apply acrylic spray primer to nonmetallic sculptures. If the sculpture is metallic, use an etching spray primer. If the sculpture is composed of stained wood, apply a shellac-based spray primer. Employ the right application procedure, or runs and sags may appear: hold an eight-inch space between the sculpture and spraying tip: Spray left to right, without lingering on any one area for more than a second. Let the sculpture dry for two hours.
- 5). Paint the sculpture as you primed it. Use an acrylic spray enamel on nonmetallic sculptures. Apply an oil-based enamel to metal sculptures. Don't touch the sculpture for two full hours.
