- Pay attention to local and national news outlets during the winter months, especially if you live in an area that is susceptible to snow blizzards. Check every now and then to make sure you know what is going on with the weather. Do not ignore any blizzard watches or warnings, and make sure to always assume the worst to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
- Keep your home stocked with groceries and important supplies during the winter season. Keep bottled water on hand if you live in an area where your pipes might freeze or where power outages can affect the water supply. Make sure to have non-perishable food on hand that can be consumed at any time, regardless of the weather. Flashlights and lamps are also important in case of a power outage. Keep batteries stocked for any appliances that require them without electricity. Have plenty of blankets handy to stave off the cold.
- Have a plan in place in the event that a blizzard hits your area. Make sure you have appropriate clothing that will keep you warm in inclement weather. If you know someone nearby who has power when you do not, see if you can stay with them, provided that driving conditions are manageable. If you have pets, make arrangements to help them deal with the blizzard. Cancel any plans you have if a blizzard occurs.
- Do not try to travel while winds are at their peak and snow is severely decreasing visibility. If you get stuck in a blizzard, turn on your hazard lights. Always make sure that you have tools and an ice scraper in your car. If a blizzard is possible and you have to drive, be very aware of those around you and drive defensively. Keep jumper cables, blankets and a flashlight handy. Make sure your cell phone is charged before going out at all.
