About the iPod Converter

    Function

    • The purpose of any iPod converter software is to convert music or video files to a format that can be used on an iPod. Music files should be converted to an mp3. Video files need to be converted to an mp4 format. The original files may be in a variety of formats, including AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV and WMA.

    Significance

    • Though iPods were once designed for the sole purpose of playing music, they are now capable of playing videos and movies. For those users who have home movies and other video downloads from the internet, special conversion software is needed to make these files compatible with an iPod. Movies with a digital copy included as well as videos downloaded from iTunes will not need this software.

    Types

    • There is a plethora of converter software available on the internet. These range from free downloads, to programs that cost as much as $30. The various programs will likely support different varieties of file types. If you only have a few videos or songs to convert, a free program is probably your best option.

    Features

    • There are so many converter programs available that it may be difficult to choose one. Some distinguishing features include adjustable settings, allowing you to control the video size or frame rate. If you have a lot of files to convert, you may want to look for a batch conversion feature. If price is a factor, look into the many free converter programs available.

    Considerations

    • Before selecting a program to download, read the fine print to make sure that it is compatible with your computer. Some software may not be compatible with a Mac versus a PC. A few programs also note that they are compatible with Windows Vista. If you have Vista, selecting one of these may prevent additional glitches, though most programs designed for PCs should work. You should also check the specific format of the files you need to convert to make sure that the software you choose will be able to convert it.
