- 1). Center the front wheels. Take the key from the ignition. This will protect the supplemental restraint system from damage. Disconnect the battery cables.
- 2). Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and remove the transfer case if the car is equipped with All Wheel Drive. Remove the bolt connecting the steering column and steering rack input shaft then remove the cotter pins and uncouple the tie rod ends.
- 3). Remove the frame members (both right and left) and the stabilizer bar bracket. If you have four-wheel drive, you will need to disconnect and plug the steering lines to the rear pump. Remove the steering assembly along with the rubber mounts. Move the unit to the right to pull it from the crossmember.
- 4). Install the replacement rack and torque the mounting bolts to 51 foot-pounds. Align the rubber mounts and crossmember indentations then insert the pinch bolt.
- 5). Return the frame members to their original position and torque the bolts between 43 and 51 foot pounds. Use new cotter pins when you reconnect the tie rods. Reinstall exhaust pipe. If your car is four-wheel-drive, reconnect the hoses and transfer case at the point where you removed them.
- 6). Refill the reservoir until the levels are stable then bleed the system of air. Check for leaks in the steering lines. When you finish, you should realign the front end.
