- Hand-washing bras in specific lingerie laundering products or gentle detergents like Woolite can significantly extend their life. Soaking them for a while and then gently rubbing with your fingers in a back and forth motion works well. Ringing bras out can cause them to become distorted; especially in bras with underwire. By squeezing the bra gently between both hands, most of the water can be removed. Placing the bra on a clean towel for an hour or two and then transferring to a hanger where it can finish air drying will result in a clean and fresh bra.
- While some lingerie professionals claim it is fine to launder a bra in a washing machine, drying one in a clothes dryer is a big mistake. The gentle setting with mild detergent, in a cycle without any additional clothing will result in a clean bra. Placing other clothing into the wash cycle with the bra can result in the hooks catching and the underwire becoming twisted.
Hang the washed bra to dry for a few hours after removing it from the washing machine.
