- An in-car navigation system can help guide you to unknown destinations with a mapped route and verbal commands; however, it can also be a distraction while driving. In the Toyota Avalon, when the vehicle is in motion, there are limited actions that can be made with the navigation system. This prevents the driver from configuring a route guidance instead of paying attention to the road. There are certain options that are available while the vehicle is in motion.
- When the vehicle is placed into the "Reverse" gear, the navigation screen automatically switches to a rear view monitoring system. The camera is located on the trunk above the license plate and provides a video image of the road behind you that may be difficult to see by looking out the rear window. This system is only a tool to help you operate the vehicle in reverse and should not be entirely relied upon. Always check your mirrors and blind spots when moving in reverse.
- After you have set up a route guidance, there are several options that you can access while the vehicle is in motion. Pressing the "+" and "-" buttons on the navigation screen zooms in and out of the map, giving you a better view of your route. Pressing the compass icon in the top left of the screen displays a compass. Pressing the map button above the "+" button allows you to change the map display to single view, dual view or turn list. Pressing the "Route" button brings you back to the route guidance screen. For hands-free operation, these options can be accessed with voice commands using the steering wheel-mounted "Voice" button.
- While you cannot program a new destination while the vehicle is in motion, you can get route guidance to an emergency destination. By pressing the "DEST" button on the navigation console, you have the option to select a route to the nearest police station, hospital, fire department or dealership.
