- 1). Purchase the replacement seal. Keep in mind that the replacement seal for steel and aluminum doors is called a U-shaped astragal. Be sure to take a piece of the old seal to the hardware store to ensure a perfect match. The seal for a wooden garage door is also called a gasket. Ensure the kit for wooden doors includes the galvanized nails, otherwise purchase them separately.
- 2). Open the garage door and lock it halfway open, or at a good working angle.
- 3). Remove the old seal. Use the screwdriver to open the end of the U-shaped channel ends on the aluminum/steel doors and slide the seal completely out. Pry away the old seal on wooden doors.
- 4). Prep the garage door. Spray silicone spray into the tracks of the aluminum and steel doors for easier seal application. Wooden doors may require a coat of primer and paint at this point if the paint is chipped, cracking or missing.
- 5). Attach the U-shaped seal by sliding it into the grooves until the end. Crimp the metal ends on each side with the pliers to keep it in place. Stand at one end of wooden doors and place the wide flange side on the inside edge of the door. Line up the edges and hammer one nail to hold it in place. Attach the bottom edge of the seal to the outside edge and nail again. Hammer a nail in the center of the two edges. Continue the hammering process every 3 to 4 inches until the job is complete.
