Effectiveness Of Dust On Bed Bugs

Bed bugs continue to plague our homes, hotels and even air planes. They are difficult to kill and for international travelers an extreme concern. With all the recommended control methods out on the market today, reviewing what type of products are still showing to be 100% effective against bed bugs in a necessary task. We have only summarized a study done to determine the effectiveness of dust on bed bugs.

New study released on the use of Dust for the control of Bed bugs was very promising in that is demonstrated the ability of a dust to effective kill even pyrethroid resistant strains of bed bugs.

Dust have been used for pest control since really as far as we have records of history, dust baths for the control of human lice. Dust has been used for a very long time to control bed bugs, diatomaceous earth has been used for thousands of years.

The life cycle of the bedbug includes egg, nymph and adult. The bedbug female can lay about 200 eggs at a rate of 3 to 4 a day, in the cracks and crevices in the floor and bed. The female bed bugs will lay their eggs after a blood meal.

The eggs will hatch in one or two weeks into Nymphs. The Nymphs will begin feeding immediately, and this period will last for 14 to 30 days. The bedbugs will shed five times before becoming adults. The adult Bedbugs will mate after maturing. Total time from hatch to egg laying is 4 to 9 weeks.

This particular study tested four different types of bed bug populations and exposed them all to five different types of dust. Delta Dust and Tempo dust (pyrethroid-based dusts) and three desiccant dusts, drione, MotherEarth D and NIC 325. They exposed the bed bugs continuously and recorded mortality daily.

The results, the Tempo Dust killed 100% of bed bugs from all of the populations of bed bugs and withing 24 hours. Drione Dust killed 100% of the bed bug strains but within 72 hours ( at least for the resistant strains). Motherearth was slower acting but was successful in killing greater than 90% within 4 to 10 days.

The highly level of mortality of the bed bugs and even the resistant strains is encouraging and demonstrates the need for use of a type of dust. Dust is typically applied behind outlets and switches plates, beneath baseboards, and carpet edges. Also, it can be applied to the inner framework of couches and box springs.

There are also pressurized dust such as Tri-die that can be injected into cracks and crevices.Dust continue to show their effectiveness on bed bugs and this is promising when we are continue to see strains that are resistant to Pyrethrin applications. No Bed Bug treatment should be without the use of some type of dust.
