- 1). Find the MSO plate, a metal plate located on the outboard mounting bracket. "MSO" stands for "manufacturer's statement of origin."
- 2). Read the name of the manufacturer on the top half of the MSO plate. If it says "Chrysler Marine" or "Force," it's a Chrysler outboard. This is the most reliable method for a motor that was built before 1990.
- 3). Note the serial number and model number on the MSO plate. With the serial number and model number, you can determine the year of manufacture by looking this information up online at Mastertech Marine's Force Outboard's Model Year Chart (see References). Enter the chart first for the horsepower of the motor, then for the serial number.
