- 1). Remove the toilet tank lid on the American Standard toilet and set it aside.
- 2). Look for the toilet float. Depending on what type of American Standard toilet you're working with, it could use one of two different types of floats: an integrated float that fits around the fill valve, or a ball float on the end of a float rod. The integrated float looks like a donut floating around the fill valve, while the float type will be connected to the fill valve by a float rod and is spherical in shape.
- 3). Adjust the integrated float by turning the screw on the side of the fill valve. Rotating the screw to the right lowers the float and the water level inside the American Standard Toilet, while turning the screw counterclockwise raises the float and fill level.
- 4). Adjust a float-ball type by bending the metal float rod. Bending the float rod down will lower the ball, while bending the rod so that the float turns upward will raise the ball and the water level. Take care not to bend too much, or you might break the rod.
- 5). Flush the toilet. Watch the water level as it fills. Make further adjustments, if needed.
- 6). Replace the tank lid.
