- 1). If your handheld vacuum is cordless, make sure it is fully charged. If your handheld vacuum has a cord, plug it into a nearby outlet.
- 2). Turn on your handheld vacuum and suck up the loose debris. Cordless models do not run for long--some only for 10 minutes--so work quickly.
- 3). Use the built-in extension nozzle if your handheld vacuum cleaner model comes with it. This can make quick work of debris stuck in tight corners or around and behind large objects.
- 4). Free the handheld vacuum of clogs by removing the container and shaking it over a wastebasket during use if necessary. You may need to poke larger pieces of debris from the hose with a pencil or pin.
- 5). Empty the container of your handheld vacuum into a wastebasket if it is a bag-less model; this may require that you remove the filter as well, which you can shake into the wastebasket and even brush off with a rag or soft-bristled brush. If your vacuum uses a bag, wait until the bag is full before throwing the bag away and replacing it with a clean bag.
- 6). Secure the container back onto the vacuum cleaner and, if it is cordless, return it to its charging station.
