- 1). Shut off the electrical power to the lighting circuit. Switch off the circuit breaker or pull the fuse that supplies the electricity to the lights.
- 2). Remove the switch cover plate by turning the two screws in a counterclockwise direction. Pull the cover from the switch.
- 3). Turn the two switch screws in a counterclockwise direction to remove the switch from the electrical box.
- 4). Pull the switch, with the wires still attached, from the electrical box.
- 5). Identify the position of the wires on the switch with a piece of masking tape on each wire. Mark the location with a pen.
- 6). Loosen the screw terminals on the switch by turning them in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the wires.
- 7). Attach the wires one at a time to each screw terminal on the replacement light switch. Identify the locations from the masking tape labels. Tighten the wires under the screw heads of the switch. If needed, use the long jaws of the needle nose pliers to aid in holding the wire.
- 8). Push the switch into the electrical box. Exercise caution so as not to pinch the wires between the switch and box.
- 9). Install the switch screws to the electrical box. Replace the switch cover. Turn the electrical power back on.
