How to Draw a Flying Butterfly For Kids

    • 1). Draw a small circle. Below that and slightly to the right, draw an oval that's taller in height but the same width as the circle. The two should connect. Draw another oval below that, again connecting to and slightly to the right of the shape above it, but make this much longer in length and a little thicker in width than the pieces above it. You've now formed the body of the butterfly. These three connecting parts should be in the direction of a diagonal line pointing down and to the right. This will help give the look of movement.

    • 2). Draw the upper wing (what's known as the "forewing") of the butterfly on each side of the first oval you drew. To do this, draw a straight horizontal line that starts at the bottom corner of the oval and goes out a few spaces. Then, draw a line that starts at the top corner of the oval, curves up and then down before coming down to connect to the horizontal line you drew earlier in this step.

    • 3). Draw the lower wing (what's known as the "hind wing") on each side of the bottom, bigger oval you drew in the first step. Start by drawing a straight horizontal line that begins at the upper-top corner of the oval and then goes out a few spaces. Then, draw a line going down and curving inward a bit before straightening out as this line travels below the bottom of the oval. Then, round that corner and curve it back upward until it connects to the very bottom, center of the big oval.

    • 4). Draw a couple of sideways Ws (similar to a "W" flipped 90 degrees to the right) on the wings on the left side of the butterfly. Make these tall in height but thin in width, as if the sideways "W" has been smooshed. Do the same thing for the wings on the ride side of the butterfly but flip the "W" 90 degrees to the left instead of right. These will help give texture to the wings.

    • 5). Add two small circles to the small circle at the top, representing the butterfly's eyes. Add antennae by drawing, on the top-left corner of that circle, one line that curves up and to the left, and on the top right corner of that circle, one line that curves up and to the right. On the end of these lines, draw and fill in a small circle. You are now done drawing the flying butterfly.
