- 1). Pour a puddle of red and a puddle of yellow paint onto your palette. Draw two medium sized circles onto the canvas using a pencil.
- 2
Moisten the paint brush with water and blot it dry on the towel. Load the brush with the yellow paint and fill in both circles. Let the color dry. If necessary, apply a second coat of yellow to the circles and let it dry. The two colors alone are opaque and it would take many coats to cover a surface. By using the yellow as an undertone, it will make the red bolder and brighter. - 3
Fill in both circles with the red, covering the yellow completely. Let the color dry. The red will have an orange tinge to it, making it a Cadmium Red Light color. The yellow undertone has created this color for you and now will allow you to create more depth and shadow to the circles. - 4
Load the brush with red and paint the lower side of one circle to deepen the red color. With the brush still loaded with the red, pick up some yellow and mix it into the brush by swishing it back and forth on the palette. Apply the mixed color to the top and side of the circle, creating a light source. Clean the brush in water and blot dry. - 5
Create more light and shadow using additional yellow when painting the second circle. Add a little red paint to the brush and pick up more yellow. Blend the color into the brush by swishing it on the palette and then apply it to the bottom and side of the second circle. You can continue to lighten or darken the circles by adding the appropriate color to the brush and specific area of the circle. By using the undertone method, you have eliminated several steps in base coating, shading and highlighting.
