- 1). Send ruby-colored invitations to the party. Ruby is the traditional gift for the 40th wedding anniversary. Print the invitations on top-quality cardstock. Use black lettering and cream or white envelopes. Another idea is to wrap white ribbon around the ruby invitation for a classy touch.
- 2). Decorate the venue in keeping with the ruby theme. Cream contrasts well with ruby as an accent color. Cover tables in ruby-red tablecloths, with a cream-colored runner across the middle of the table. If you feel that's too much red, use a cream-colored tablecloth with a red runner and red plates and wine goblets. Create a centerpiece with red roses in a glass vase filled with cream-colored pebbles. Another idea is to have different pictures of the couple throughout the years in a red picture frame on every table. Wrap chairs with big ruby bows that hang off the backs. Leave plenty of room for a dance floor. Decorate the entrance with a red and cream balloon arch. Try to have red accent lighting along the walls of the venue.
- 3). Decide on a buffet or sit-down meal. For a very formal affair, serve a sit-down dinner with a pre-selected meal served to each guest. A buffet, however, will be less expensive and can be just as nice. An ice sculpture of the number 40 or the letter of the couple's last name would add an elegant touch to a buffet. Include some of the couple's favorite foods and have an attendant call up tables one a time to avoid long lines at the buffet. Have bottles of ruby-red wine at the table for toasts.
- 4). Plan the entertainment. Prepare a slideshow with pictures and home video of the couple's wedding, the birth of their children and other special moments. Have friends of the couple, or their children and grandchildren, stand up and say a few words in tribute to the couple. A grandchild with singing or musical talent can perform for the event. Have a band play music that was popular when the couple was young; they can dance the night away.
