How to Paint Scary Animal Eyes

    • 1). Browse pictures of animals online or in a book and select the type of animal eyes you want to paint. Use this picture as a reference while you draw out the eyes and paint them.

    • 2). Draw out the basic shape of your animal eye using a pencil on your canvas or piece of painting paper. Do not begin with a circle for the actual eye. Rather, begin by drawing out the shape of the eyelids and the corners of the eye.

    • 3). Shade the lids and corners of the eye with the paint medium of your choice. Use dark colors for the eyelids and the corners of the eye to make the colored iris of your animal eyes stand out.

    • 4). Paint in the circular shape of the eyeball between the two eyelids and add detail using subtle washes of color. Begin by filling the entire eyeball with a layer of light color and add progressively darker shades around the edges to create shadows, depth and shape. Shading the outside edges of the eyeball will help suggest a roundness of shape.

    • 5). Paint in your animal's pupils. Different animals have different types of pupils so use your picture as reference when working on the pupil. Dogs have round, dark brown pupils like humans whereas cats have black vertical pupils that can contract to small slits or expand to almost the circumference of the iris. Other animals like goats, deer, cattle and horses have horizontal slit-like pupils that expand the animal's peripheral depth perception.

    • 6). Add highlights to the pupil of the eye to create dimension and to make your animal eyes look more realistic. The more realistic your animal eyes are, the more scary they will be.

    • 7). Paint in your animal's lashes, if it has any, using your picture for reference. Add some fur around the eyes. When painting fur, pay attention to the direction of the fur --- an animal's fur grows away from its eyes. The placement of the eyes can also effect how realistic your animal eyes appear. Decide whether you want your animal eyes to be close set, wide open or partially closed.

    • 8). Create shadows around your animal eyes or place them in an entirely dark background to add a scary element. The brighter the hue of your animal's eyes against the background, the scarier they will appear.
