- To connect your iPod Touch to a Wi-Fi network, you must first make sure that the device's Wi-Fi capabilities are turned on. Tap the "Settings" icon, then tap the "Wi-Fi" option. If the indicator bar reads "Off," tap it one time to switch it to "On." This will turn on the iPod Touch's ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks. It will then scan the area for any available signals. After a few moments, a list of available networks will appear. Tap the name of the one to which you wish.
- If you have a wireless router or wireless network already set up in your home, you can connect to your home network by tapping on its name in the "Available Networks" list. The signal strength of the network is also displayed next to its name: Three solid colored bars means it is at full signal strength; no solid colored bars means it is an exceptionally weak signal.
- The iPod Touch will display both secure and unsecure (open) networks. You can tell whether the network is open or closed by whether it has a padlock icon next to its name in the "Available Networks" list. Open networks are commonly found in such places as coffee shops, bookstores, libraries and McDonalds. If the network is open, the Touch should connect when you tap on the name.
However, if the network is secure, you will need to know the multi-digit passcode associated with that network. Once you tap on the network's name, a pop-up screen will prompt you to enter the passcode. There is no way to connect to a secure network without the network's passcode. If you are attempting to connect to a secure home network, the default passcode can be found on the bottom of the network's router. If you are attempting to connect to a secure network in another location, you must obtain the passcode from the system administrator.
