How to Install a Baldwin Deadbolt

    • 1). Measure 40 inches up from the floor on the door's edge. Center the provided template over this mark and tape it to the door. Use a hole punch to mark the circles' centers. Remove the template from the door.

    • 2). Use a 1 5/8-inch boring bit to drill a hole through the door's face. Use a 1-inch boring bit to drill a hole through the door's edge. Center each bits' tips on the center marks when you drill the holes.

    • 3). Slide the latch through the door's edge hole. Outline the latch plate with a utility knife and mark the screw holes. Remove the latch and set it aside. Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the screw hole marks. Carve out the wood inside the tracing with a 1/2-inch wood chisel. Make the area deep enough for the latch plate to sit flush with the door.

    • 4). Slide the latch into the hole and use a Phillips drill bit to secure it with the supplied screws. Temporarily install the interior faceplate. Close the door and extend the latch a few times so it marks the door jamb. Open the door.

    • 5). Use a 1-inch boring bit to drill two holes -- one hole 5/16 inches above the latch mark on the jamb and one hole 5/16 inches below the latch mark on the jamb. Make each hole approximately 1 1/4 inch deep. Use a chisel to square out the two holes so the latch box fits inside. Slide the latch box in and trace around the faceplate with a utility knife. Mark the screw holes' locations.

    • 6). Chisel out the wood in the traced area until the strike box, reinforcing strike and faceplate install flush with the jamb. Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the screw hole markings. Insert the strike box into the hole. Lay the reinforcing strike plate over it. Secure those two pieces in place with the provided screws. Cover the reinforcing strike plate with the faceplate and secure them with the provided screws.

    • 7). Open the door and extend the deadbolt until it sticks out as far as possible. From the door's exterior side, slide the round guide into the hole. Point the guide's arrow up when you install it. Place the collar over the guide and put the key cylinder through the collar. Hold these items in place.

    • 8). Move to the door's interior side. If you have a single-cylinder deadbolt, lay the mounting plate over the hole. Place the turn piece over the mounting plate and secure it in place with the provided screws. For a double-cylinder deadbolt, push the interior key cylinder into the hole. Cover the cylinder with the cylinder cover and put the collar over that. Twist the collar to tighten everything in place.
