A blocked toilet bowl may appear to be like an emergency DIY job but do not worry as it is a task which is very often straight forward to fix by utilising some very simple methods.
Some useful items you will need
Rubber Gloves
Clearing Rods
Goggles
Bucket
Plunger
Firstly you need to inspect
the Damage
Unfortunately toilets will at times get blocked most
likely to too much toilet paper or excessive amounts being put down the basin. First things first you need to find the
position of the block. If you have drain covers outdoors it is worth lifting the one closest to the bowl. If the chamber is full you need to try and clear the blockage in the pipes or around the drain either using a specialist rod or a makeshift
device such as a wire or piece of wood. I find a an old wired coat hanger to be one of the best and easiest implements thats usually easy to find. If the drain is unblocked then the blockage must be located somewhere between the chamber and the pan. In most cases the blockage is found at the pan itself.
Unblocking that troublesome Toilet
You can try forcing a flexible drain cleaning wire down the WC pan. It is usually a good plan to ask someone
to observe the drain chamber while you are doing this to see if the item causing the blockage emerges as it often will. Anything coming out that may have caused the blockage should be taken out. If you dont remove an offending item you only run the risk of it causing a
blockage further down the system which may be more difficult to unblock.
Its worth using a cheap plunger if you have one. Caustic soda or a chemical drain cleaner may help, but you must follow the instructions on the packaging very carefully and remember these chemicals
need to be handled in a safe manner. Aways use rubber gloves.
Plunger Basics
Make sure you
use a good plunger to unblick the damage. Most people have a plunger but
sometimes this will not always work and
can be a bit tricky to manoeuvre.
Toilets bowls can benefit from a unique flange shaped or a ball shaped plunger. Both these types of plunger have a bottom which is shaped to seal the opening in the bottom of the
toilet bowl. This seal action as you plunge forces the
necessary vacuum and pressure and is more effective.
