Keep Your Phone Cozy:

Telephones that double as PDAs or mini computers are a lot of fun, but they're also kind of bulky compared to less well-equipped models. Knitting a cozy for your phone is a great way to protect it from scratches and to make it easy to find in a purse or briefcase.

This cozy features a cool Braid cable, which looks complicated in the instructions but is really not that difficult, and it gives your cozy a cool look.

Materials:

• 20 yards of bulky weight wool yarn or yarn of your choice (I used Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky in Mistletoe)
• one pairs size 10.5 US needles
• one cable needle
• scissors
• yarn needle

Gauge

Sixteen stitches and 20 rows per four inches (4 stitches and 5 rows per inch) in cable pattern.

Size

Finished size is three inches wide and 10 inches long unsewn. It is the perfect fit for a Tilt, but would fit similar phones or PDAs as well.

Instructions:

1. Cast on 13 stitches.
2. Work in Braid Cable until piece measures 10 inches, or about six repeats, as described below.
3. Bind off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew with.
4. Fold work in half, sewing up side seams.
5. Slide your phone into the pouch to keep it protected.

Working the Cable Pattern:

• Row 1: Purl 2. Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front. Purl 1, knit 2 off cable needle. Slip 1 stitch onto cable needle and hold in back. Knit 2 and purl 1 from cable needle. Repeat front cross. Purl 2.
• Row 2: K2, P2, K2, P4, K3.
• Row 3: P3. Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle. P2, K2, P2.

• Row 4: K2, P2, K2, P4, K3.
• Row 5: P2. Cross back as in row 1, then cross front and repeat cross back. P2.
• Row 6: K3, P4, K2, P2, K2.
• Row 7: P2, K2, P2. Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle. P3.
• Row 8: K3, P4, K2, P2, K2.

Make it Your Own:

Thirteen stitches makes a knit piece that is three inches wide, but if your phone is bigger than that, you can add stitches to the sides, or you can subtract stitches for a smaller phone (though the cable pattern itself is nine stitches wide).

The first two and last two stitches of each row are not actually part of the cable pattern, so you can take them out or add to them as needed. Just remember that this is a background of Reverse Stockinette Stitch, so any stitches you add should be purls on the odd numbered rows and knits on the even numbered rows.
