- 1). Choose how you want to organize your collection. Many collectors do it by year and then by alphabetical order. In your spreadsheet, the first column should read "year" and the second column should be "player."
- 2). Add in categories of "position" and "team." This will help you further organize your collection. You may be in a position to sell cards to a potential buyer who is a fan of a certain team such as the Red Sox. You may find a buyer who wants great pitchers or outfielders.
- 3). Grade the condition of your card. Differentiate with rankings such as poor, fair, good, very good, excellent, excellent-mint, near mint, near mint-mint and mint. These categories along with the demand for your particular card will determine its worth.
- 4). Mark the value of the card in the database. This will change every six months to a year. Compare your previous price with the value listed in a publication like Beckett's Sports Card monthly, which is considered the bible of the sports card collecting business. It is important to know the value of the cards in your collection.
