- Renova helps reduce acne by clearing out pores and sloughing away old dead skin cells. It is usually prescribed in a once-a-day dosage (administered at bedtime) for individuals under the age of 50, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, dosage strength prescribed varies based on how bad the individual's acne problem is, as well as age. In addition, acne may appear to worsen before getting better, and it can take up to 12 weeks before improvement is noticeable.
- By lightening the facial skin, as well as removing old skin cells and stimulating growth of new skin, Renova is able to treat dark spots, rough skin and wrinkles. While Renova is used to treat wrinkles, it does not claim to permanently remove them (or diminish them completely), especially the deeper wrinkles. Therefore, patients are generally encouraged to avoid additional sun exposure. In addition, some prescription medications (Tetracycline is one) can interact negatively with Renova, so it is important to advise your dermatologist of all the medications you take prior to beginning Renova.
- Renova diminishes stretch marks by rebuilding the collagen in the skin of the affected stretch mark area. New collagen production within the stretch mark area aids in changing its appearance, making the mark less noticeable and more like surrounding skin that is not damaged in this way. But Renova is only effective with stretch marks that are six weeks old (or less) and still pink or faint red in color.
- Mild side effects can include a slight warmth in the skin where treated, dryness and/or peeling. Other side effects sometimes experienced in the early stages of treatment include redness, burning, itching and stinging. If these conditions are experienced and continue to be a source of concern, contact your medical professional.
- According to Drugs.com, tretinoin, the drug in Renova, should not be used by individuals who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are sunburned or have irritated skin. Also, those who have sunlight sensitivity or are allergic to any ingredients contained in tretinoin should not use Renova either.
