- 1). Connect your headset to your iPod, either by plugging it into the headphone jack or turning on Bluetooth, depending on the model. The iPod touch does not have a speaker and microphone like the iPhone, so you need an external set.
- 2). Download a VoIP app from the App Store. Skype and Fring allow you to make free calls to other users on their network, and you can opt to pay minute-by-minute or monthly to call mobile numbers. Truphone offers free calls to other Tru users as well as to Skype and Google Talk users. Most of these services also provide free instant messaging, and with some, you can opt to pay for text messaging (SMS) services.
- 3). Sign up for an account with your chosen service and select a username. Like instant messaging services, your username -- not your phone number -- is how your friends search for you and contact you. You can opt to buy a phone number on these services, which allows you to receive calls from standard phones, but it costs a monthly fee.
- 4). Connect your iPod touch to Wi-Fi. If you will be on the go, consider investing in a Mi-Fi device. This device connects to cellular Internet signals, like the 3G and 4G network for the iPhone, and transforms that signal into a Wi-Fi signal, thereby providing Wi-Fi access wherever there is cellular service.
- 5). Search for contacts and add them to your contact list. Tell your friends and family to sign up for the same service so your calls to them are free.
- 6). Leave the app open whenever you want to be able to receive calls. You must be online and have the app enabled to send and receive calls or messages.
