- 1). Close the toilet's water valve by turning the handle clockwise as much as you can by hand. Flush the toilet once to drain most of the water from the tank and ensure that the water valve is closed.
- 2). Pull off the caps over the closet bolts and nuts and remove the nuts using an adjustable wrench. Undo the nut connecting the toilet's water line to the shutoff valve, then pull the toilet up and off the closet bolts.
- 3). Clean the old wax ring off the plastic flange using a putty knife. Remove any wax residue with a rag and mineral spirits, then remove the screws holding the flange to the bathroom floor.
- 4). Rotate the position of the flange so the screw holes in the flange do not line up with the old ones in the floor, then mark the new position of the screw holes on the floor using a marker. Drill guide holes using a power drill, then drive the screws through the flange and into the floor until the screw heads are flush with the flange and the flange is firmly fastened to the floor.
- 5). Press the new wax seal around the opening in the bottom of the toilet, with the rounded side pressed against the toilet. Replace the toilet over the closet bolts and tighten the nuts on the bolts until the toilet does not rock when you sit on it.
- 6). Tighten the connecting nut between the toilet's water line and the shutoff valve. Turn the shutoff valve handle counterclockwise to refill the toilet tank.
