How to Visit Boston For Free

How to Visit Boston For Free

    • 1). Visit the Boston Public library. Located near Copley Square this place is a very fine example of a large-city public library. It has free internet access, free computers to use and fascinating architecture, both inside and outside. Also check out the several galleries that showcase local artistic talent and historical displays dealing with Boston's rich history.

    • 2). Walk around Copley Square, which is just outside the library. You get a great view of the Prudential Building and several churches. There are a row of park benches just across the street from the library and in front of the Prudential Building. This is a popular place for locals to relax and enjoy themselves.

    • 3). Visit a church. The Old South Church is located right on Copley Square and is definitely worth a look inside. The Old North Church (www.oldnorth.com), famous for its participation in the "Ride of Paul Revere" is located along the Freedom Trail. Only a donation is suggested to walk inside, but if you want to tour the famous tower, you will have to pay for that tour.

    • 4). Visit the Boston Common. This is a large green space right in the center of the city, where people congregate to enjoy the outdoors. In winter you can watch the ice skaters at a makeshift pond. The Freedom Trail also starts here.

    • 5). Walk along the Freedom Trail. This trail of historic places begins at the Commons, where free maps are given out. It proceeds past a historic cemetery ( Granary Burying Grounds ) and through the downtown area to Faneuil Hall and the Holocaust Memorial.
From here it travels through the very unique North End ( this is a good place to enjoy a not-so-free cup of coffee or Cappuccino), which features the Old North Church.
Be sure and follow the trail over to Charlestown, where there is a waterfront and tower to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill. There is no charge to climb the tower, which offers a great view of Boston.

    • 6). Walk along the Charles River in Back Bay. The view of Cambridge is great. If you like you can cross over the river on one of the bridges or just keep walking upriver. The pathway goes for quite a ways and is very popular with cyclists.

    • 7). Visit the Boston Museum of Fine Arts( www.mfa.org) on Wednesdays after 5, when it is free. This is a great savings to one of this country's great art museums. Please note that the special exhibits are never free.
