- 1). Fill a planting pot with sand, to within 1/4 inch of the rim. Moisten the sand until it is uniformly wet. Stir it as you again add water, setting it aside to drain while the austree cutting is taken.
- 2). Choose an austree branch to use as a cutting. Locate one that developed over the current season, between the green and woody stage, that has the diameter of a pencil.
- 3). Cut 6 inches from the branch, measured toward the tree from the tip, at a 45-degree angle. Make the cut with sharp pruning shears.
- 4). Snap the foliage from the austree cutting, allowing two to three leaves to remain at the tip.
- 5). Poke the angled-end of the austree cutting into the sand in the planting pot and use your hands to pack the sand around it. The stem should be buried up to within 1 inch of the bottom leaves.
- 6). Set the pot in the garden in an area that is out of direct sun. Water the sand to keep it moist at all times. The austree will be rooted within one month.
