Catfish for Pond Stocking

    Food

    • You can feed channel catfish commercial feed to get a clean, white meat with good marbling. Plus, commercial feed brings the fish to the top of the pond, allowing the whole family to enjoy the fish. If your pond only contains catfish and no other fish, they may not require supplemental feeding.

    Stocking

    • A new pond stocked with 100 2- to 4-inch fingerling catfish per acre works well. For established ponds, 100 larger-sized fingerlings measuring from 4 to 6 inches each works best so not all of them become food for other fish living in the pond. A fingerling's chance of survival remains highest when they get stocked in cool water in the spring.

    Reproduction

    • Channel catfish require special containers, such as hollow logs, 5-gallon buckets or wooden boxes, for spawning. Otherwise, they do not reproduce in ponds. Catfish do not affect reproduction rates of other fish living in the same pond. Catfish work well in ponds stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and black crappie.
