- 1). Cut off any foliage that is infested with pests. Cut it back to a main branch and bag and dispose of it.
- 2). Prune excess growth in the center of the golden euonymous shrub. It requires good air circulation to ward off fungal infections and pests, and removing growth from the middle of the plant allows for this. Cut stems back to their points of origin.
- 3). Remove any growth that is not in keeping with the shape you desire. Golden euonymous can tolerate heavy pruning at any time of the year. Use hand pruners, as gas or electric clippers can scar the leaves.
- 4). Rake the garden bed beneath and around the golden euonymous to remove any foliage, twigs and other debris in which pests can hide and breed. Add a fresh, 3-inch layer of mulch, 5 inches from the base of the shrub and spread out to the drip line.
