How to Control Sand Burrs

    • 1). Wait until March to begin the sand burr control process. Apply the pre-emergent herbicide to the area with a garden sprayer, concentrating on the sand burr weeds and not the entire lawn. The pre-emergent herbicide does not kill the existing weeds, but helps prevent future sand burrs by keeping their seeds from germinating. Use a riding mower to cut the grassy area that has the sand burrs.

    • 2). Fill the garden sprayer up with the pre-emergent herbicide. Walk around the lawn and spray the pre-emergent herbicide directly onto the sand burr plant. Saturate each sand burr plant with the pre-emergent herbicide.

    • 3). Wait a couple of months for the pre-emergent herbicide to form the protective barrier that prevents that sand burr seeds from germinating. Apply another round of the pre-emergent herbicide to the sand burr plants in June. Cut the area with the riding lawn mower before applying the herbicide to the sand burr plants.

    • 4). Spray each sand burr plant with the pre-emergent herbicide, saturating the plant. Wait two to four months for the protective barrier to rebuild again inside of the soil to prevent the sand burr seeds from germinating.

    • 5). Cut the entire grass again with the riding lawn mower after the two- to four- month period is over. Locate a piece of carpet that is about 3-feet wide and about 8-feet long. You may have to purchase a piece of carpet for this task. Secure the 3-foot wide end of the carpet to the back of the riding lawn mower with a piece of rope. This will give you eight feet of carpet to pull around. The fibers in the carpet will catch and hold loose or attached sand burrs.

    • 6). Pull the carpet around the entire lawn, with the blades of the mower off. The carpet will pick up sand burrs and sand burr seeds.

    • 7). Wait a month or two and use the Round-Up Grass and Weed Killer to kill any existing sand burrs. Round-Up is a non-selective herbicide that kills existing weeds. Once the pre-emergent herbicide has been applied twice and the carpet method has been used, the Round-Up will kill growing sand burrs. Apply the Round-Up Grass and Weed Killer once a month, as needed, to control the sand burr population.
