How to Set Up an Auto Sound System

    Replace the Stereo Deck

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable from the vehicle's battery. Use a wench or pliers to loosen the cable's clamp and move it away from the battery until the stereo installation is complete. Move it to the inside of the vehicle.

    • 2). Remove the factory stereo as directed in the vehicle's repair manual. You may need to remove dashboard paneling to access the stereo mounting dock.

    • 3). Disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the rear panel of the stock stereo unit. Check your specific vehicle's stereo wiring connectors for release mechanisms. Pulling the connectors without squeezing the mechanisms may lead to damage of the plastic connectors.

    • 4). Insert a faceplate adapter or installation cage into the vehicle's stereo dock. Use a faceplate adapter specific to your vehicle make, if available. Slide the installation cage into the stereo dock and bend the metal tabs with a flat screwdriver to secure the cage within the dock.

    • 5). Connect the vehicle's stereo wiring to a wiring harness adapter. The adapter will level any compatibility gaps between the specific wiring of your vehicle and the new stereo's outlets.

    • 6). Plug the wiring harness adapter "leads" into the outlets on the back of the new stereo. The outlets for the stereo wiring are located on the right side of the aftermarket stereo's rear panel of outlets. Consult the stereo's manual for specific connection diagrams.

    Connect an Amplifier

    • 1). Connect the amplifier wiring kit's ring terminal to the positive battery lead. Plug the power cable (also included in the amp wiring kit) into the ring terminal. To prevent shorting the components and damaging the wiring, remove the fuse from the slot on the ring terminal until the amplifier has been fully installed and connected.

    • 2). Route the power cable into the interior of the vehicle through the firewall. Consult your vehicle's repair manual for the location of the path between the engine compartment and the inside of the vehicle.

    • 3). Connect the patch cables to the wiring harness adapter leads designed to receive amplifier wiring. See the wiring harness adapter manual for an exact patch-cable connection diagram.

    • 4). Route the patch cables through the back of the vehicle's stereo dock. The path to the floor of the vehicle through the stereo dock varies slightly among different vehicle makes. See the repair manual for the avenue specific to your vehicle.

    • 5). Slide the new stereo into the installation cage until it snaps into place. Replace any panels that were necessarily removed to replace the stereo unit.

    • 6). Route the amplifier wiring to the location of the amp. For a professional look, lift the carpeting near the door openings to conceal the wiring as you run it to the rear of the vehicle. Lay the power cable and the patch cables on opposite sides of the vehicle to prevent interference.

    • 7). Plug the power cable into the amp. Connect the patch cables to the signal and turn-on lead outlets on the amplifier. Connect the grounding wire from the amp's ground to a screw or bolt near the amp's location. (For proper grounding, choose a screw directly connected to the frame of the vehicle, less than 20 inches from the amp.)

    Replace the Speakers

    • 1). Locate the vehicle's speakers. Most vehicles have speakers in the door panels and on the rear deck near the rear windshield.

    • 2). Remove the speaker covers with a flat screwdriver or trim panel removal tool. You may need to remove the door panels to access speakers in the doors. Consult the repair manual for specific procedures for removing your vehicle's door panels.

    • 3). Remove the speakers from their respective docks with a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 4). Disconnect the speaker wires from the back of the speaker.

    • 5). Connect the speaker wires to the new speakers. Use a speaker harness to connect speakers that are not equipped to receive the speaker wiring from your vehicle.

    • 6). Place the new speakers into their docks and replace the screws around the perimeter. Replace the speaker covers and press firmly to snap them back into place. Replace the door panels if it was necessary to remove them to gain access to the door speakers. Return to the battery.

    • 7). Place the fuse into the fuse slot on the ring terminal (for the amplifier power supply).

    • 8). Replace the negative battery cable clamp over the negative battery lead post. Tighten the cable's clamp to the post with the wrench. Close the vehicle's hood.
