Tourist Information for Gulf Shores, Alabama

    Lodging

    • While Gulf Shores has traditional hotels and motels, condos make up the majority of the available lodging in the area. Lodging is often described by location: "Gulf front" indicates the property is on the beach, while "beach access" usually means the accommodations are a very short walk to the beach. Parking during the summer months and spring break is often at a premium (and isn't free), so booking lodging close to or on the beach is a major consideration if you plan to spend time in the sand.

    Snowbirds

    • Gulf Shores is a favorite destination for northerners looking to escape the winter months. Snowbirds will find many of their own kind in the area, as the migration usually begins on January 1st and lasts until spring break. Gulf Shores even has "snowbird clubs" designed to bring people from the same states together. Most condominiums offer monthly rates, which are often the same as the weekly rate during the summer high season. Many of the snowbirds are seniors, and local businesses often tailor activities to accommodate them.

    Beaches

    • Gulf Shores offers several public beaches with convenient access. Some of the hotels and condos have private beaches as well, and many have pools with a view of the beach. The public beach has pavilions, volleyball nets on the beach, bars and restaurants overlooking the gulf, and beach attendants. Gulf State Park is a favorite for those who want to get away from the crowds, as its beaches are six miles from the center of town and major activity.

    Golf

    • Golfers will find Gulf Shores courses to be both challenging and unusual, as most are designed to peacefully coexist with nature. Some of the courses were designed by Arnold Palmer, Robert Von Hagge, Jerry Pate, Bruce Devlin and Earl Stone. Golf packages are available, with many condos and resorts located right on the courses.

    Restaurants and nightlife

    • Visitors will enjoy the causal atmosphere of Gulf Shores restaurants, as the laid-back atmosphere rarely requires formal attire. Many restaurants feature outdoor dining. Local seafood is served at most establishments; visitors may want to sample "royal red" shrimp, a popular crustacean not usually available in other parts of the country. Guests will find plenty of nightlife in Gulf Shores, with many bars featuring local entertainment on some nights.
