- Breaking up concrete is a task best suited for people who are strong and healthy enough for strenuous physical labor. Depending on the depth of the concrete, a sledgehammer may be the only necessary tool. In cases where the concrete is deeper than 3 inches, a professional-sized rental pneumatic jackhammer may be necessary for concrete removal.
- Determine the depth of the concrete to be broken up. If the concrete is three inches or less, a sledgehammer is an effective method of concrete removal. With two people, this process is easier and less time-consuming. Use a shovel to dig at the edge of the concrete to reveal the depth of the slab. Have one person use a pick or mattock to lift up the corner of the concrete using leverage, and another person use the sledgehammer to break up the concrete.
- Rent an electric or pneumatic jackhammer to break up thicker reinforced concrete slabs when a sledgehammer is not effective. Using a jackhammer requires strength and agility of the person operating it. The jackhammer is a power tool that forcibly inserts a sharp-edged chisel into the concrete, breaking it up into smaller pieces for removal.
- Wear safety gear when attempting to break up concrete. The concrete chunks can fly up and injure the person operating either the sledgehammer or the jackhammer. Concrete dust is dangerous to inhale and acts as an eye irritant. Choose safety goggles that have a snug fit, gloves that are the proper size and a quality dust mask. Always wear ear protection when using the jackhammer tool; it is loud and has the ability to cause hearing damage.
