- 1). Wrap electrical tape around the jaws of a pipe wrench, which will protect the finish on your shower head. Clamp the pipe wrench to the back of the shower head, where it connects to the water pipe, and turn the shower head counterclockwise to remove it from the water pipe.
- 2). Soak the shower head in vinegar for an hour or more, if the shower head has chalky white buildup on it. Scrub it vigorously with a stiff bristle brush before rinsing it thoroughly with water.
- 3). Insert a small screwdriver in the back opening of the shower head. Use the screwdriver to remove the rubber gasket inside the shower head, as well as the metal screen or the plastic disc.
- 4). Rinse the metal screen with water to remove any stuck sediment, and then place the screen and rubber gasket back inside the shower head. If your shower head has a plastic disc, which is a flow restrictor, keep the restrictor disc out of the shower head to improve your water pressure.
- 5). Wrap plumber's tape around the water pipe's threads clockwise, covering the threads completely. Thread the shower head back onto the water pipe and use the pipe wrench to tighten the connection.
