Types of Steel Pipes

    Features

    • Steel pipes are used for various purposes not only because of their known strength and durability, but also for their ability to withstand different conditions, which normally wear and tear pipes made from other materials. Unlike PVC or fiberglass tubes, steel pipes are easily molded to fit a particular application.

    Types

    • The four types of steel pipes are line steel pipes, standard steel pipes, structural steel pipes and plumbing tubes. Line steel pipes are typically found in industrial frameworks, which distribute energy, such as gases and combustible liquids. Standard steel pipes, meanwhile, are used for low-pressure conveyance of gas, water, and other light load applications. Structural steel pipes, on the other hand, are used mainly for infrastructure. Lastly, plumbing tubes (or system pipes), are designed to distribute water from water sources to homes and buildings.

    Shape

    • Steel types come in various shapes. Round and square steel types are usually used in construction and infrastructure, and hollow shaped pipes are used for heavy duty industrial frameworks due to their capacity to handle great pressure. Rectangular steel pipes, however, are found in consumer applications, such as container racks, motorcycles, bicycles, doors, windows and sometimes furniture.

    Material

    • Steel pipes differ in strength, flexibility and durability because of their chemical composition. Stainless steel has more chromium content compared with other steel types, and they are more resistant to oxidation and organic decomposition. Alloy steel pipes are also known for their strength due to the presence of other elements, such as nickel, silicon and tungsten. These pipes are also used for industrial and domestic applications. Other steel types are softer and less resistant to chemical reactions, and use mild and pure iron steel. Black steel, on the other hand, is coated with protective oil and is known for its malleability.

    Benefits

    • Steel pipes prove to be highly dependable when used as pathways for liquid and gas distribution, and can serve as skeletal frameworks for various infrastructures. In addition, because of their resistance against decomposition, steel pipes can last for many years before they are replaced.
