- 1). Stack folding gym mats on the exercise floor at a height from which the gymnast can kick off into a handstand.
- 2). Have the gymnast lie on their stomach on the folded mats with their shoulders resting just off the mats.
- 3). Instruct the gymnast to drop their hands to the exercise floor and drive their legs up into the air behind them, rolling off the mat and into a hand stand.
- 4). Add layers to the mat if the gymnast is struggling to attain the handstand position.
- 5). Remove layers when the gymnast can routinely complete the handstand from the current mat settings until the gymnast can complete the maneuver while lying completely flat on the floor.
- 6). Allow the gymnast to begin attempting the move on the bars only after they can enter the handstand with no support mats.
