How to Wire a Commercial Freezer

    • 1). Locate the main circuit breaker inside the electrical panel. Flip the switch to its "Off" position. Unscrew the cover of the electrical panel, using a screwdriver, and install a 240-volt (dual pole) circuit breaker into an empty slot on the panel board.

    • 2). Unscrew the faceplate of a 240-volt self-contained three-wire receptacle. Unscrew the receptacle from the outlet box, and mount the box on a wall nearest to the freezer. Insert a three-wire electrical cable through a hole on top of the box, and pull down the cable from inside the box by about 12 inches.

    • 3). Strip off 4 inches of sheathing from the tip of the electrical cable to expose the inner wires, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch of plastic insulation from the tip of the exposed inner wires, using a wire stripper. Wrap a band of black electrical tape around the white wire to indicate that it is live.

    • 4). Loosen the brass and the green terminal screws on the receptacle. Wrap each wire clockwise to its corresponding terminal screw on the receptacle in the following order: black wire (hot) to a brass terminal screw, white wire (hot) to a brass terminal screw on the other side of the receptacle and green or bare wire (ground) to the green terminal screw. Twist each screw clockwise with a screwdriver to tighten the connection.

    • 5). Run the electrical cable across the ceiling to the electrical panel. Cut away 12 inches of outer covering at the end of the cable, using diagonal pliers. Divert the black wire and white wire to the end of the double pole breaker. Divert the bare or green wire to the ground bar. Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation from the tip of each wire, using a wire stripper.

    • 6). Loosen the two terminal screws at the outer end of the double pole circuit breaker. Plug the tip of the black wire and the tip of the white wire in any order into a slot under the loosened terminal screws.

    • 7). Wrap a band of black electrical tape around the white wire to indicate that it is a live wire. Insert the tip of the ground wire into the slot under the terminal screw on the ground bar. Tighten each terminal screw to secure each connection. Replace the cover of the electrical panel, and turn on the main circuit breaker. Plug in the 240-volt freezer to test the wiring.
