- 1). Turn off the circuit breaker for the heating and cooling unit. Do not attempt to change the thermostat while there is still power to the unit. Remove the cover for the existing thermostat. Label each of the wires using a marker and masking tape before you disconnect them from the existing thermostat. If the wires are not visible, you may have to remove the thermostat from the wall to get to them.
- 2). Disconnect the wires from the thermostat using a screwdriver. Remove the new thermostat from the packaging. Separate the thermostat from the wall plate. Place the new wall plate on the mounting surface and pull the wires through the opening. Place a torpedo level alongside the mounting plate and level it. Mark the holes for drilling using a marker. Remove the plate from the wall. Drill the holes necessary for mounting the plate using a drill and a 3/16-inch drill bit, if the original holes don't match the screw holes from your new thermostat.
- 3). Insert screw anchors into the holes that you just drilled. Place the mounting plate on the wall and secure it by putting screws through the holes into the screw anchors. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Be sure to pull the wires through the opening when you attach the wall plate to the wall. Connect the wires to the new mounting plate according to the labels you made when removing the old thermostat. If you have a four wire system, you must use the included jumper wire and install it between the RH and RC1 terminals. Tighten the terminal screws using a screwdriver.
- 4). Move the switch on the back of the thermostat left or right according to the type of system you have. Gas or oil heating systems must be set to HG, single stage heat pumps should be set on to SSHP and electrical heating systems must be set to HE. Insert the backup batteries into the unit and replace the battery cover. Place the thermostat onto the mounting plate and push it firmly to lock it into place. Turn the power on to the heating and cooling system. Program the thermostat to meet your needs if the factory settings do not.
