- 1). Access the steering axle underneath the front of the GMC truck, if still installed. The steering axle runs between both front wheels. It is attached to the steering column and box, which work in tandem to steer the vehicle. The Dana/Spicer identification tag is located In the center of the steering axle, between the spring pads, facing the front of the truck.
- 2). Locate the Dana/Spicer steering axle model number on the identification tag. The model number is located on the left side of the ID tag, under the model heading. An example model number for a Dana/Spicer steering axle is "I-200-W."
- 3). Decode the Dana/Spicer steering axle model number. The first position, "I," represents the axle series, "200" is the load capacity and "W" represents the beam type. Dana/Spicer beam types are as follows: "W" indicates over 244-centimeter wide-track axle; "SB" identifies a coach axle; and "SG" identifies an I-beam axle with a standard overall width.
