- 1). Dry out your home using a dehumidifier. In humid climates it is prudent to have a dehumidifier up and running in your basement during the hottest months. The dehumidifier sucks the moisture out of the air, lessening the chances of mold growth and slowing any current growth.
- 2). Check and fix any leaks. If water is leaking into your home, your dehumidifier will be working overtime and its efforts are defeated if you do not fix the source of the problem.
- 3). Purchase and install an air filtration unit. These specialized, and often pricey, units eat the mold spores and reduce your chances of experiencing the health problems associated with black fungus.
- 4). Clean existing mold. Don non-porous rubber gloves. Mix a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the area where the mold is growing and also six inches out in each direction. Allow the bleach solution to sit on the mold for approximately 10 minutes before you rinse it off.
- 5). Don a face mask. Using a sponge and the water and bleach solution, remove the mold from your walls and ceilings. Discard any equipment that touched the mold. Wash all of the clothes you were wearing immediately; mold spores can travel on clothing.
