How to Install a Car Hood Lift

    Removal Of The Strut Rod

    • 1). Open the hood and support it with an old broom handle or section of 2-by-4 so it does not fall when you remove the strut. You could also recruit a friend or helper to hold the hood up.

    • 2). Remove the spring clip holding the strut at the hood end of the rod. A small, straight screw driver makes a great tool to pry the clip off. Do not discard this clip.

    • 3). Pull the strut away from the ball mount on the hood. It should pull right off once the clip has been removed.

    • 4). Remove the spring retaining clip on the lower end of the strut rod and set it aside. The strut should now be free and may fall off the mount.

    • 5). Remove the strut rod by pulling it straight out and away from the mount. Do not discard it until you verify that the new one matches and will fit properly. A worn strut is better than no strut, so if necessary, you can put it back on.

Installation Of The New Strut Rod

    • 1). Verify that the mounting points, length and diameter of the new strut matches the one that you removed. If the new strut comes with new ball mounts, now is the time to replace them.

    • 2). Attach the new strut rod on the lower mount by sliding it straight onto the ball mount. Place a small drop of grease on the mount to ensure there is no binding of the strut on the mount.

    • 3). Snap the retaining clip into place on the strut rod. Be sure it clips on securely and still allows the strut to swivel on the mount.

    • 4). Slide the strut rod on to the upper mount, and apply a small amount of grease to ensure movement of the strut on the mount. Snap the retaining clip into place and be sure it is completely seated.

    • 5). Repeat for the second strut rod and remove the broom handle or wooden support at this time. Close the hood carefully to check for proper movement and operation of the strut.
