When it comes to reversing the effects of aging, eliminating acne scars and treating more serious skin conditions, there are several different types of lasers that can get the job done. The bulk of laser technology today is used for cosmetic purposes including anti-aging and tattoo removal, while other types are used to treat more serious conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Here is a list of the most common lasers used among plastic surgeons today. - Ablative laser treatment works well for treating acne scars and is a popular method with clients because it has been shown to have a significant effect after just one treatment (most non-ablative lasers require multiple treatments before any visible changes occur). The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that in 2008, out of the 400,262 laser procedures performed in America, approximately 103,394 of them were ablative. However, the procedure is typically more expensive than non-ablative laser skin resurfacing with average costs running around $2,128 in 2010 (non-ablative laser treatments cost about $1,359). Examples of ablative lasers include the CO2 and Er:YAG.
- Fractioned lasers, such as the Fraxel, are great for targeting small areas of the skin where damage has occurred. They are wildly popular in the cosmetic world, as they are best suited for treating wrinkles around the eye, age spots, sun damage and acne scars. Using a controlled wound-healing process, this laser treatment creates tiny wounds in the deeper layer of the skin, while leaving the surrounding areas untouched. The surface skin remains undamaged while the layers beneath begin to heal. It's a gradual process, but eventually old skin cells will slough off and the skin will begin to repair itself while encouraging collagen regeneration. As of 2010, fractioned laser treatment costs ranged from $400 to $1,000 per session, depending on the size of the area.
- Excimer lasers are most commonly used to promote re-pigmentation and have also shown significant improvement in chronic stable plaque psoriasis, atopic eczema and aged white stretch marks. The UVB laser works to deliver light therapy safely and directly to the problem area. It is typically faster than conventional therapy and does not require any additional creams or ointments to be used after treatment. There is said to be no pain or discomfort during the procedure, or any restrictions following treatment. It is a lengthier process than some laser treatments, as results don't typically show until around the fourth session, sometimes taking as long as the tenth. It is also an ongoing treatment, but results can last anywhere from four to six months or longer. On the plus side, Excimer laser treatment sessions are typically very fast, lasting under five minutes each time.
