- 1). Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Enter "dcpromo /adv" into the text box and press the "OK" button. This opens a wizard that guides you through the process. Click the "Next" button at the opening screen.
- 2). Select "Additional domain controller for an existing domain" in the next screen labeled "Domain Controller Type." Click the "Next" button.
- 3). Select "Over the network" in the next screen. This copies the domain information to the newly created backup domain controller.
- 4). Enter the domain's administrator password. An administrator account is required before you can make any changes to the Windows domain. Click the "Next" button.
- 5). Click the "Finish" button at the final summary screen. The information is copied over, which can take several minutes. Reboot the machine when the installation is complete for the changes to take effect.
