    Cumberland Island National Seashore

    • Cumberland Island National Seashore--part of the National Park Service--has a range of outdoor and historical attractions. It includes backcountry camping, bird watching for 335 species, hiking on 50 miles of trails, six public hunts during the year, swimming, fishing and beach combing for items like shark teeth.

      The Cumberland Island National Seashore's museum highlights the island's history, including its connection to the War of 1812. You can also see the First African Baptist Church, built on the settlement area for African American workers in 1893. John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette got married there in September 1996. People get to Cumberland Island by taking a ferry from the visitor's center in St. Marys.

    Green Elephant Ghost Tours

    • The Green Elephant Ghost Tours introduce you to the alleged supernatural forces found in St. Marys. Each tour takes you on a 90-minute walk through downtown. Guides point out ghost legends and places of ghost sightings. The most haunted place in the city is Orange Hall where an 8-year-old ghost named Jane Pratt has supposedly been seen at the hall, according to the city's convention and visitors bureau's website. The tour also stops at Oak Grove Cemetery, which is the setting of legends. You might even spot the St. Marys' Resurrection Angel floating above the cemetery's oak trees, the city's convention and visitors bureau reports.

    St. Marys Submarine Museum

    • Submarines are a big part of St. Mary's history. The Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base is adjacent to the city. The St. Marys Submarine Museum preserves submarine history with over 20,000 items of submarine memorabilia, including artifacts, historical documents, paintings and models. It includes a functional periscope visitors can test out as well as pieces from Kursk, a sunken Russian sub.
