- 1). Locate the water pump on the engine block. It is the drive belt accessory with a cooling house running into its face. The thermostat housing links the water pump to the cooling hose with mounting bolts. A ground cable is pinned under one of these mounting bolts.
- 2). Disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal and positioning it to the side.
- 3). Remove the mounting bolts and pull the thermostat housing off the water pump. The thermostat will be a small button stopper behind a rubber seal. Remove the thermostat and the rubber seal.
- 4). Place the new thermostat in the housing with a new rubber seal. Tighten the mounting bolts to 9 pound-feet.
- 5). Refill the cooling system with antifreeze. Raise the front end of the car or park on an incline so the radiator cap is the highest point in the cooling system. Open the cap and run the engine for five minutes to bleed the system of air pockets.
